Advantages and Disadvantages of Hair Weaving

Although both men and women suffer from hair loss, it is more pronounced in men who suffer from baldness. While they may retain all the hair in the back and sides of their head, areas which are genetically immune to balding, they lose most or all of the hair on the top of their heads.

While many take in their stride, being mentally ready for the genetic catastrophe, it does not go down well for celebrities and film personalities. They either cover their heads with expensive hats, bandanas etc. or resort to more expensive solutions.

Although hair transplant procedures are catching up fast, they are quite expensive and the forte of celebrities who can afford it and for whom a receding hair line will have disastrous effects on their career. Hair transplant is achieved by FUE, FUT techniques besides the use of highly specialized robots.

Another alternative is hair weaving which is faster and costs less. Hair weaving can be performed by non-medical personnel and other service providers in the field. The process involves the addition of human or synthetic hair to bald areas of scalp or to a person’s natural hair.

Human hair is procured from various sources, cleaned and processed before being sold by the lucrative hair industry. The person going for a hair weave can pick the hair type depending on his/her own hair. The person can also select the type of styling.

The weaving techniques are netting, fusion, bonding, tracking, lace extensions and micro braiding to name a few. The technique helps patients suffering from baldness especially if there is extensive balding as in alopecia areata totalis.

However the procedure has its advantages and
disadvantages. Firstly hair weaving is not permanent as the added hair is without a bulb which cannot produce a new hair. The added hair may get damaged with time and is rather time consuming taking into consideration the care, washing and multiple visits to the stylist. Also experts opine that a completely natural look may not be achieved with hair weaving. Also skin problems may occur.

Sometimes bacteria may collect among the weaves. The woven hair is more brittle as it does not get nutrient supply from the scalp making it dry. If damaged they have to be removed.

As for advantages the procedure is fast and the patient can have a full crop of hair sooner. People can add more volume and length to hair. If the hair weave available is of desired color and style then the procedure is fast. Hair weaves give an opportunity to try different colors and textures.

The present day techniques have optimized hair matching to give a more natural look. The procedure is non-invasive hence painless and less time consuming. Initial investment is less but it may add on with follow-up care.
