L'Oreal Set to Seize Hair Care Products Market with Global Hair Research Center

Hair care has become a concern for all types of individuals, especially those with genetic history of alopecia. Genetics apart, hair loss can also occur due to several other reasons including malnutrition, poor eating habits, excessive exposure to sun and pollution and lifestyle habits like tobacco and drug abuse. L'Oréal, a brand well known for its beauty care products range, is all set to launch a massive research on hair care products that improve both health and appearance of hair. As part of this initiative, L'Oréal has launched Global Hair Research Center located in Paris Saint-Ouen.

The Center's Research & Innovation programs (R&I) is exclusively dedicated to the hair care profession which includes hair coloring, hair care (shampoos, conditioners), styling (sprays, gels, waxes), and perms, smoothing or straightening.

The research center is one of the largest investments in the company’s history. The 25,000 sq m Center hosts 500 employees, which include chemists, physico-chemists, opticians, materials scientists, metrologists, rheologists, computer scientists and statisticians.

The research center provides a collaborative environment conducive to sharing and transfer of skills. Researchers are provided with advanced methods and tools to drive progressive development in the development of hair care products.

L'Oreal's Research Center will function as the head of six regional centers around the world. It is also the headquarters for the International Departments in hair color, hair care and hair styling. The six R&I regional centers are located in Japan, China, India, USA, Brazil and in Saint-Ouen for Europe.

The highlight of L'Oréal's Research Center dedicated to hair care is the use of advanced tools like robot mimic product applications on hair and numerical modeling tools, which help in preparing time-saving formula. To date the automatic weighing robot has weighed nearly one million coloring samples for approximately 100,000 formulae that require testing.

"The Saint Ouen research center exemplifies our strategy which aims to make beauty universal based on a deep understanding of consumers' needs and aspirations, in order to offer products that match women's and men's different cultures, beauty routines and purchasing power," said Jean-Paul Agon, chairman and CEO of L'Oréal. The hair care industry is also abuzz with a new discovery that may lead to development of cure for baldness. Scientists at the Science Translational Medicine have identified a protein called prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) which probably is the root cause for baldness in men. This discovery could lead to the development of a drug that may offer an effective remedy for hair loss in men, many think.
