Hair Transplant Procedures: What You Need To Know

Hair transplant procedures are gaining popularity. With the advent of latest hair transplant techniques like follicular unit extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Hair Transplants (FUT), there has been substantial increase in the number of people opting for hair restoration therapies. Hair restoration procedures like FUE and FUT are found effective in people suffering from androgenic alopecia, the most common type of hair loss found in both men and women.

FUE is a tedious procedure because it deals with identifying, extracting and transplanting individual hair strands on your head. To overcome these difficulties, robot-assisted hair restoration procedures are also gaining popularity. These procedures are intended to reduce the time and efforts involved in hair transplant surgeries. More and more hair restoration specialists are now offering these methods as they give more accurate results while also saving the time and efforts of both the patient and the surgeon. These methods are cheaper too, as they involve less effort from the hair surgeon.

However, FUE has certain advantages over other hair restoration procedures. As this technique deals with individual follicles, it does not result in scars like those after a Follicular Unit Hair Transplant (FUT), also known as a strip procedure. A patient who has undergone FUT will have no option but grow hair a minimum of 1 inch to cover the scar. FUT is cheaper than FUE because of this reason.

Hair transplant surgeries need to be performed under the guidance of a well-trained professional hair surgeon. Once the procedure is completed, It will take about a week to get the sutures removed completely. The grafts will be firmly anchored in approximately ten days. The transplant may go undetectable in less than one month, but depending on the nature of the skin and the body’s response to healing, it may delay further.

To see the actual effect of hair transplant, patients may have to wait 3 to 4 months post-op. It will take about a year to see the actual result of the hair transplant. Following the hair transplant surgery, patients are advised to abstain from caffeine, alcohol and some drugs. Medications are prescribed to boost the growth of hair. Some of these medications are also prescribed several months prior to surgery.
