Hair Loss Concerns among Women Grow Globally
Every individual in the world experiences hair fall. Experts say it’s normal to lose 50 to 150 hair strands every day. The number varies among individuals and depends on a number of factors. While it is natural to lose hair every day, it is important that they get replaced at the same rate.
According to experts, hair grows 1.06 cm (2.54 in) every 28 days or about 10 cm (25 in) per year. New growth generally matches the amount of hair shed. If shedding is greater than production, it’s a clinical hair loss. For example, if an individual loses 100 hair strands a day and he/she gets only 50 hair strands replaced everyday it indicates hair loss.
Hair fall can occur due to a number of reasons. They may be natural causes like seasonal changes and nutritional variation or external causes like use of chemicals, pollution, cosmetic procedures, etc.
Hair loss is a major concern for all women. A recent survey conducted globally has found that hair loss was the number 1 concern for 1 in every 5 women in BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China). A “strong hair” was ranked as a top 5 need in BRIC markets with figures: Brazil (26 percent), Russia (23 percent), India (17 percent) and China (15 percent). The concern about hair loss affects not only elderly women. The survey has revealed that hair loss affects women in age group 16-45+ years. Hair loss is commonly perceived as non-curable, and the condition leads to lot of anxiety and behavioral changes among suffers. According to survey participants, hair loss affects their personality or mood as many think hair and hair style are an expression of self.
More than 69 percent of women think hair look has an impact on how they feel about themselves. This feeling is strongest in India (80 percent) and Russia (72 percent). Nearly 75 percent of women think environmental causes affect hair fall, and over a third feel their bodies and biological makeup are the main cause of hair fall. Some of these causes include hereditary, illness, stress and age related issues.
Hair loss sufferers are increasingly turning to hair loss prevention methods and over-the-counter solutions to combat hair loss. This group also includes women with normal hair loss.
Hair loss can affect women’s sex life too, says a new survey conducted by Viviscal, a provider of hair care solutions. Of those suffering from hair loss, 65 percent indicated that noticeable hair loss inhibits them from participating in normal activities, including swimming, going to the hairdresser, or having their spouse or significant other caress or touch their hair.
