DigniCap Scalp Cooling System Prevents Hair Loss in Cancer Patients

The DigniCap scalp cooling system is used as a treatment method to prevent hair loss that occurs in cancer patients going through chemotherapy. Circle Health’s CircleBath Hospital which serves the residents of Bath and Bristol joins many other hospitals across the globe using the DigniCap system.

The specialist nurses in the hospital who were treating cancer patients found that the DigniCap was most suitable for patients owing to its efficacy and comfort in wearing.

The scalp cooling system was developed by
Dignitana, a specialist in scalp-cooling technology. The system is gentle to use and is effective in avoiding hair loss that occurs during chemotherapy.

By monitoring the temperature, the system ensures that the patient is always comfortable. As the ears are exposed by the specially designed cap it does not impair hearing and is comfortable to wear continuously. The scalp cooling process helps eliminate hair loss. The tight-fitting silicone cap is connected to a cooling and control unit. Canals in the cap allow the passage of coolant which circulates around the scalp. To maintain the temperature an elastic and insulating outer cap of neoprene is also provided in the system.

The system works like a refrigerator and can be controlled via a touch-screen with clear and simple symbols. The coolant used is called DigniCool and its temperature is always kept optimum by a compressor. The coolant is then circulated and its temperature is controlled by temperature sensors in the cap and its flow is regulated by valves. In case of errors or if any temperature deviation is detected the system sets off alarms. A temperature sensor is provided for each cooling circuit besides also a safety sensor.

The silicone inner cap is molded to ensure the best fit matching the hairline and comes in four sizes. Silicone was selected as the best material as it withstands low temperatures and is adaptable for human use. The coolant canals in the silicone cap are divided into two separate labyrinthine circuits to cover the front as well as back of the head. A pump takes care of the circulation of the coolant.

To enable a patient to visit the rest room, snap-on couplings are provided which allow the disconnection of the cooling cap from the control unit. The neoprene insulating material on the outer side of the cooling cap insulates the system. The cap is snuggly fit on the head and is highly effective in keeping the scalp cool during treatment.

The DigniCap scalp cooling system is sure to help cancer patients undergoing treatment preventing hair loss.
