Hair Loss Due to Aging Might be Preventable for Some

Aging is a part of life we must all endure. Anyone afforded the opportunity to grow into their older years must also deal with the effects of aging on the body - some inevitable and others the result of years of wear and tear and abuse.

Everything from fine lines and wrinkles, to bad knees and arthritis are all common ailments of the older crowd. For some of us, these conditions also include hair loss. While there may be hereditary or medical factors playing its course with hair loss for many, some of us entering our older years can actually prevent our locks from falling out if we take better care a nurturing to the tresses.

The biggest complaint with hair as we age is the lack of life it has.. this includes feeling thinner, drier and just appearing duller than it did in our younger years.

This, Dr. Bauman, a physician in Boca Raton, Fla. said in a recent NY Times article, is due to follicle function diminishing with age.

In order to keep the hair healthy and give it some of the vitamins its no longer getting like it used to, Dr. Bauman suggested that in addition to making sure to eat protein, adding more foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and dark green vegetables that have vitamins A and C in them, is essential.

For those looking to go a little further to ensure their hair remains healthy, there is also pills with biotin that can be taken to strengthen the hair and nails and help them to grow.

In addition, laser treatments that can be done in one’s own home or at a hair restoration clinic are an option to assist with hair loss as is hair transplant surgery which would replace areas of the scalp no longer growing hair from the follicle with donor units that are transplanted to that location.
