New Zealand Women Losing Hair Faster, Sooner?

As females, we are taught from an early age to value our appearance and take care of things like our hair since it is part of how we look to the outside world. Whether this is still important or not to who we really are, is another debate. But regardless of that, most women today take some pride in the hair they have and the look they are able to achieve when they style it to their liking.

Most women probably don't think about how it would be to talk around with no hair, or large bald patches - even though a lot of the styling, coloring, and stress they are putting their tresses through each day, may put them in that situation.

While there are always cases of illness and hereditary that can cause hair loss for individuals, rarely do people think about the other consequences that can lead to hair loss. And the aftereffect is being recognized across the globe.

One recent report by Scoop.co.nz looked closer at the amount of younger women in New Zealand who are now being affected by hair loss.

These women are in their 20’s and 30’s and is a direct result of the increased stress levels of today’s world - where balancing work, social and family life can leave women burnt out and stressed beyond repair.

“Stress affects hormone balance, with one hormone in particular called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) responsible for inhibiting hair growth by effectively suffocating the follicle,” SRS Hair Clinic Director and hair loss expert Dr Raj Sidhu was quoted in the article as saying. “For those genetically predisposed to hair loss, DHT can accelerate the onset of hair loss meaning it expresses much earlier in life.”

There is hope however. In addition to ditching the extreme dieting, hair styling and stress from our lives, options like better vitamin intake and getting more hours of sleep, as well as more drastic measures like hair transplant surgery - all offer a solution.
