Most Women in Middle East and Asia Suffer Hair Loss: Study
Women in the Middle East and Asia suffer hair loss the most, according to a recent survey conducted on one hundred Dubai and Abu Dhabi-based women aged 25–60, which include UAE nationals, Asians, Western and Arab women, reports Emirates247.
The research, commissioned by INVERSION and conducted by research experts Nielsen, reveals that more than 67 percent of women in the UAE suffer hair loss, making hair loss as the most significant beauty problem experienced by UAE women.
The concern over hair fall was the highest among expat Arab women with 92 percent experiencing some degree of hair loss in the UAE. Expat Asian women are also affected with hair loss with 80 percent of them experiencing hair loss.
Malnutrition is one of the major reasons for hair fall in women of all age groups, according to researchers. Other culprits include desalinated tap water and extreme climate conditions typical of the Middle East and some parts of Asia.
"The hair is a great barometer and indicator of general health,” said Mike Ryan, consultant trichologist, Hair SPA Dubai. “Hair loss is a much more widespread problem for women of all ages than anyone realizes, and there are several factors that can cause it, but nutrition is of vital importance. Hair cells are among the fastest growing in the body, so they need good nutrition".
In general, the survey proved that malnutrition is the primary cause of many beauty problems in these women. Most of the survey participants also reported related problems such as splitting nails, dry hair and skin, pimples and acne, and weight-gain as other major beauty concerns.
Arab women, however, are not keen to seek advice in concerns related to their beauty problems. Only 16 percent of the surveyed women have ever sought advice concerning the condition from a nutritionist. Rather they prefer seeking advice from friends and family (36 percent), dermatologists (33 percent) or a pharmacist (12 percent).
A recent study has confirmed that natural supplements like Viviscal are effective in treating hair loss. Viviscal is an all-natural supplement with ingredients such as AminoMar C Marine Complex that is proprietary to the company, horsetail extract, vitamin C and other antioxidants and proteins that help strengthen hair and support hair growth.
