Ayurvedic Treatment for Hair Loss
Hair loss, according to Ayurveda, is caused by excess of "pitta" in our body. Main causes of pitta are higher intake of oily and spicy foods as well as consumption of excessive tea, coffee, and alcohol. Smoking is also a major culprit for abnormal pitta level in our body.
Hair loss may also be caused by anemia, general weakness following a disease, anxiety, stress, intake of too much medication and low blood circulation. Ayurveda also cites hormonal imbalance, chronic diseases like typhoid fever and presence of dandruff as other major reasons for hair loss.
According to an article at Indiamart, Ayurveda considers hair as a byproduct of bone formation. The tissues from which the bones are formed are responsible for the growth of your hair. Hair loss is more common in people who have straight and blonde hair. They are also more likely to gray faster than thick and coarse hair.
Ayurveda prescribes different types of treatments for hair loss. Depending on the causes of the hair loss, remedies may be prescribed. In general, a combination of treatment that includes herbal medicines and oil massages along with a proper diet regime and stress-relieving practices like yoga and meditation can be the perfect solution to hair loss.
Chemical shampoos and medications increase the pitta in our body, according to Ayurveda, so patients are advised to avoid their use as much as possible. Ayurveda prescribes certain herbal shampoos for hair loss and dandruff in men and women. Most common Ayurvedic shampoos available are Amala (embilica officinalis), Shikakai (Acacia concinna). Ayurvedic massage is an excellent therapy to increase the blood circulation to hair roots. Several types of Ayurvedic oils are available to treat hair loss. They contain herbal extracts, but the base of most of them is coconut oil or mustard oil.
With the growing popularity of Ayurvedic herbal remedies for hair loss, several manufacturers have joined the bandwagon to market their products aggressively. While some of these companies follow ethical standards in meeting quality and price of hair care products, majority of manufacturers flout norms and exploit the vulnerability of customers for commercial benefits.
Recently, the government of southern Indian state of Kerala initiated action against three herbal product manufacturers, following customer complaints about the claims made by manufacturers of these herbal products.
The three brands, Indulekha, Dhaathri and Sreedhareeyam, endorsed by popular personalities, are found to be making false claims about their effectiveness in curing hair loss. The herbal products are widely used by Indian women and men to combat hair loss.
Kerala's Ayurvedic Drug Control Authority has taken measures to prosecute the three companies for flouting the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act 1954. The act prohibits promoting sales of products with the help of misleading claims.
