Practice Overview & Procedures: HAIR TRANSPLANT:
The main cause of baldness is hereditary. Male baldness has certain typical patterns. Some men have baldness only in the front or the vertex, whereas others are more extensively bald. Almost all men have hair at the back and on the sides of their head which are permanent and do not fall. In hair transplant surgery, permanent hair is taken from the back and transplanted to the bald areas (front and / or vertex) by FUT or FUE Technique. The entire operation is done under local anesthesia and the patient goes home immediately after the operation.
FOLLICULAR UNIT EXTRACTION (FUE):
FUE is a hair transplant technique in which a small round punch is used to extract units of hair follicles from an area of dense hair growth to an area of baldness. The specialised punch 0.8,0.9 or 1mm in diameter, extracts hair from the scalp one at a time. The direction and angle of the follicular unit beneath the skin is not visible and is often different from the direction of the hair on the surface of the scalp. Therefore the punch when used below the surface of the skin might severs the underlying follicular unit. The small hole left behind after the follicle is extracted takes a few days to heal and as it does so the small wound contracts which makes the remaining scar smaller and less noticeable. The patient often has hundreds of small round white scars which are typically seen only after shaving the head, invisible to the human eye after his or her hair has grown out.
FOLLICULAR UNIT TRANSPLANTATION/ STRIP TECHNIQUE (FUT):
A narrow strip of scalp 6 to 15 mm in width is harvested from the back and sides of the head. The donor defect is closed primarily, leaving no residual bald area. From this strip, individual hair follicles are dissected and separated into group of 1, 2 or 3 hairs, which are known as Follicular units.
Properly spaced defects are created in the bald areas where transplant is to be done. In these defects, the Follicular Unit grafts are placed. Usually, no dressing is applied after the procedure.
There may be some temporary swelling of the forehead for 1 to 5 days. It takes 5 to 15 days for the healing of the donor site area. The transplanted hair may fall along with the scabs in 2 to 3 weeks after the surgery. New hair usually start to grow 10 to 12 weeks after the surgery, grows like normal hair, never fall and subsequently require haircuts. They can be combed to the style of your choice, and oiled and shampooed too. Normal hair growth is about 1 cm per month.
RESULTS:
In the initial 3–4 weeks after the procedure, all the transplanted hair fall off. After a rest of another month, the hair start to grow out of the scalp again. The hair then grow at a particular speed – on an average at a rate of 1 cm per month. Therefore, a waiting period of 6 months after the surgery is required to appreciate the results of the hair transplant procedure.. Once the 6 months are complete, the hair that would have grown back would be your permanent hair. They would never fall, they’ll grow normally and would need haircuts. You can cut, style, shampoo, apply hair dye or color them. The hair would grow back even if you shave your entire scalp.
For the treatment of large patch of baldness, we have transplanted 3500–5000 follicles or even more in one sitting of 6–7 hours. In case of multiple bald patches, another sitting can be scheduled after at-least 6 months of the first procedure. Depending on the donor area, one can have 3–5 sittings of hair transplant to cover even very large areas of baldness, but at an interval of 6 months or more. In areas where there is thinning of hair but not complete baldness, hair can be transplanted in between the existing hair to increase density.
